The West Bengal Police issued a warning to the public, urging them to be cautious of rumors and misinformation. They highlighted attempts by certain groups to draw inaccurate parallels between the recent murder of a Hindu man in Bangladesh and an unrelated incident that took place in West Bengal’s Murshidabad about eight months ago. The police emphasized that such comparisons were misleading, inciteful, and aimed at disrupting public order.
Addressing the situation in Murshidabad, the police mentioned that 13 suspects were swiftly apprehended in connection with the incident, and a robust charge sheet was submitted. They also noted that a verdict in the case is anticipated soon. The police denounced any efforts to link the events in Bangladesh with the incident in Murshidabad, describing it as a deceitful tactic to sow communal discord, especially when legal processes are already in motion.
In Bangladesh, unrest unfolded following the passing of Sharif Osman Hadi, a youth leader associated with the country’s 2024 pro-democracy movement, who died in a Singapore hospital. Subsequently, protests erupted in Dhaka, with demonstrators demanding the arrest of those responsible for Hadi’s death. The protests turned violent, resulting in the torching of several buildings, including those housing prominent newspapers. Tragically, a Hindu youth was lynched, and his body was set on fire while tied to a tree.
The West Bengal Police cautioned against the dissemination of false information related to these events, affirming their commitment to upholding communal harmony in the state and their unwavering stance against any attempts to disturb public tranquility. They assured that they are closely monitoring social media accounts spreading misleading content and warned of legal action against those seeking to communalize criminal occurrences. Citizens were urged not to be swayed by rumors.
