One worker was killed, and eight others were injured in a reactor blast at a pharmaceutical unit in Telangana’s Nalgonda district. The incident took place at the pharma unit in Veliminedu village on the outskirts of Chityala mandal. A fire broke out in the third block of the facility during operations, leading to the deployment of firefighting personnel with fire tenders to control the flames.
At least nine workers sustained injuries in the blast and were promptly taken to Kamineni Institute of Medical Sciences at Narketpally for treatment. Tragically, one of the workers, identified as Boddu Balakrishna (30) from Chinnakaparthi in Nalgonda district, passed away during treatment. Two of the injured workers are reported to be in critical condition.
This incident marks the second accident in the same pharmaceutical unit in less than a month. Earlier on April 9, two workers were injured in a similar blast. Director General of Police C V. Anand emphasized the importance of training fire services personnel to handle disasters in chemical factories. He stressed the necessity of coordinated efforts among various departments to effectively respond to such emergencies.
A disaster management unit has been established in the fire department, with Hyderabad Disaster Management and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) actively involved in disaster management initiatives. Last year, Telangana witnessed a tragic industrial disaster where 54 workers lost their lives and 28 others were injured in a chemical factory in Sangareddy district. The incident occurred due to a massive explosion at the manufacturing plant of Sigachi Industries in the Pashamailaram industrial area on June 30, 2025.
