At least 16 people were injured when a young man opened fire in the corridor of his former school in Turkey’s Siverek district. The attacker later died by suicide. Sanliurfa Governor Hasan Sildak visited the injured at Siverek State Hospital following the incident at Ahmet Koyuncu Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School.
Of the 16 injured, 4 were teachers, 10 were students, one was a police officer, and one was a canteen worker. Fortunately, there were no fatalities. Four of the injured, including two teachers and two students, were moved to city hospitals due to their moderate health condition. The remaining 12 are receiving treatment at Siverek State Hospital.
The attacker, a former student of the school, entered and fired randomly. Born in 2007, he took his own life during his apprehension by the police. The school has been evacuated, and investigations are ongoing to understand the incident fully, including its background. Governor Sildak expressed condolences to the people of Siverek and Sanliurfa, emphasizing the need for thorough judicial and administrative processes.
The attack, carried out by a perpetrator with no prior criminal record, is under intense scrutiny. The Chief Prosecutor’s Office will handle the legal aspects, while administrative investigations aim to provide clarity promptly. Despite security measures in place, such isolated incidents can occur, highlighting the importance of continued vigilance in safeguarding schools in Turkey.
