Zakhakhel tribesmen in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa blocked the main highway to the Torkham border point following a targeted attack that resulted in two deaths. The protesters, comprising political party activists, civil society members, and tribesmen, announced plans to arm volunteers for local patrols and imposed restrictions like a ban on motorcycle riding and government duties for Zakhakhel tribe members until peace is restored.
The demonstrators demanded a halt to polio vaccination campaigns, closure of schools, and urged for action against suspected militants in the area. They also advised local police to avoid uniforms to prevent being targeted and imposed a hefty fine for individuals aiding outlawed groups or law enforcement agencies. The road closure disrupted the deportation of Afghan families, leaving many stranded.
The protest stemmed from the killing of two individuals in Landi Kotal, leading to heightened tensions. The security situation in Pakistan, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, worsened in May according to a security assessment report by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS). The report highlighted a surge in terrorist activities, including attacks, casualties, suicide bombings, and kidnappings, indicating ongoing security challenges.
