Language: Hindi
Age Rating: UA (Suitable for viewers above 13 years)
Genre: Romantic Comedy, Drama
Streaming on: Netflix

A Modern Fairy Tale Set in Rajasthan’s Palaces

The Royals brings together Bhumi Pednekar and Ishaan Khatter in a contemporary romantic comedy set against the backdrop of a fictional royal family in Rajasthan. The story follows Sophia Kanmani Shekhar (Pednekar), a driven startup CEO with ambitious plans to transform a crumbling royal haveli into a luxury B&B, and Aviraaj Singh (Khatter), a polo-playing prince struggling to keep his family’s legacy afloat amid financial troubles.

The series promises all the classic romcom ingredients: grand palaces, glamorous costumes, witty banter, and steamy shirtless scenes featuring Khatter. However, despite the visual opulence and a strong cast, the show struggles to deliver the emotional spark and chemistry that a romantic drama demands.

Performances: Charismatic Leads but Missing the Spark

Ishaan Khatter shines as the charming, carefree prince Aviraaj, effortlessly combining regal swagger with vulnerability. His physical presence is a highlight, with plenty of polo matches and royal strolls showcasing his charisma. Bhumi Pednekar brings intensity and confidence to Sophia, portraying a modern woman balancing ambition with emotional complexity.

Supporting actors like Sakshi Tanwar add depth and gravitas, while veterans Zeenat Aman and Dino Morea are unfortunately underused, their characters feeling more like stylish cameos than integral parts of the story. Newer faces such as Vihaan Samat and Lisa Mishra provide fresh energy but don’t quite elevate the overall narrative.

Direction, Writing, and Visual Appeal

Directed by Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana, The Royals is a visual feast. The cinematography captures the faded grandeur of royal estates beautifully, and the costume design is impeccable, immersing viewers in a world of luxury and tradition. Yet, the storytelling suffers from uneven pacing and a script that leans heavily on familiar romantic tropes without adding new layers or emotional depth.

The narrative often meanders, with moments of momentum lost amid a background score that sometimes overwhelms rather than enhances. The romance between Sophia and Aviraaj feels more obligatory than organic, lacking the sizzling chemistry that would make their relationship truly compelling.

Strengths and Shortcomings

What Works:

  • Stunning visuals and production design that bring royal Rajasthan to life.
  • Strong performances from Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar.
  • Sakshi Tanwar’s grounded and heartfelt portrayal adds emotional weight.

Where It Falters:

  • The central romance lacks genuine spark and emotional intensity.
  • Underdeveloped supporting characters and missed opportunities for richer storytelling.
  • Inconsistent pacing and occasionally heavy-handed background music.

Final Verdict: ⭐️⭐️½ (2.5/5)

The Royals is a stylish and entertaining series that offers escapist fun with its royal settings and charismatic leads. However, it falls short of delivering the emotional depth and chemistry expected from a romantic drama. If you’re looking for a visually appealing, light-hearted binge with moments of charm, this series might suit your mood. But for those seeking a romance that truly ignites, The Royals remains a somewhat lukewarm affair.

Should You Watch It?
Yes, if you enjoy glamorous settings, royal intrigue, and a breezy romantic comedy. Just don’t expect fireworks-this is a pretty royal khichdi with more style than substance.
