Actor-singer Prashant Tamang, known for his role as an assassin in the popular show ‘Paatal Lok,’ has passed away at the age of 43 due to a cardiac arrest. Tamang, who won the singing reality show ‘Indian Idol’ season 3 in 2007, belonged to a Nepali-speaking Gorkha family. His journey on Indian Idol was notable not only for his singing talent but also for the immense support he received from the Gorkha community.
His fellow contestant from Indian Idol, Amit Paul, paid tribute to him on Instagram by sharing a throwback picture and expressing his disbelief at Tamang’s sudden demise. Tamang emerged as the winner of Indian Idol season 3 with a significant number of votes, releasing his debut album ‘Dhanyavaad’ in 2007, which garnered success in eastern India and Nepal. Despite limited presence in mainstream Bollywood, he found success in the Nepali music industry.
Apart from his music career, Tamang also ventured into acting in Nepali films, notably in ‘Gorkha Paltan,’ reflecting the historical Gorkha military heritage. While not consistently in the limelight of national pop culture, Tamang’s victory on Indian Idol marked a significant shift in the influence of audience voting on Indian television talent shows.
