Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited (AEML), in partnership with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), has successfully illuminated a 2.5-km portion of Gorai Beach in Borivali West that had been in darkness for nearly three years. The absence of streetlights had raised safety concerns and limited public access to the popular shoreline, despite its high daily footfall.
Efforts to install traditional lighting systems had failed due to the challenging coastal terrain, which includes rocky and sandy surfaces with high salinity causing rapid corrosion. To overcome these obstacles, Adani Electricity’s Mira-Bhayander division collaborated with the BMC to devise a customized and robust lighting solution suitable for the harsh coastal conditions.
The project involved the installation of 90 streetlight poles equipped with specialized engineering features like high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe sleeves, reinforced concrete foundations, and protective ducting for underground cables to combat corrosion. Additionally, advanced insulated cabling and multiple earthing points were implemented to ensure safety and reliability, with 5.25-meter poles strategically placed for uniform illumination across the uneven landscape.
The newly installed lighting has not only made Gorai Beach a safer and more accessible public space but has also enhanced visibility, surveillance capabilities, and increased evening footfall. Local residents and visitors have expressed relief and appreciation for the improved safety measures and the restoration of confidence in the area.
Welcoming the initiative, Rossi D’Souza, Sarpanch of Gorai Gaothan Panchayat, acknowledged the long-standing safety concerns along the beach stretch after sunset and the positive impact the lighting project has had on the community. D’Souza commended Adani Electricity and BMC for their collaborative efforts in addressing the real challenges faced by the residents and visitors, emphasizing the project’s role in enhancing safety and livelihoods.
An Adani Electricity spokesperson highlighted the complexity of the terrain and harsh environmental conditions that had kept Gorai Beach unlit for years. Through innovative engineering solutions and customized infrastructure, the project successfully transformed the once challenging stretch into a secure and inviting public space, reflecting the commitment to improving civic infrastructure and enhancing community life.
