Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan admitted his team’s shortcomings in crucial phases, especially with the ball and during the powerplay, after a five-wicket loss to New Zealand in the T20 World Cup Group D opener. Posting 182/6, Afghanistan saw a well-paced innings from Gulbadin Naib, contributing significantly alongside Sediqullah Atal, Darwish Rasooli, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Mohammad Nabi.
Reflecting on the bowling effort, Rashid Khan recognized the missed opportunities, stating, “We learnt a lot with the ball. I thought 182 was a good score to defend but we gave too many balls to score.” Despite early breakthroughs by Mujeeb Ur Rahman, New Zealand’s Tim Seifert’s aggressive 65 and partnership with Glenn Phillips shifted momentum, exposing Afghanistan’s struggles in maintaining pressure.
Rashid Khan emphasized the importance of executing plans effectively, noting the team’s failure in landing the ball in the right areas. He highlighted the necessity for a disciplined bowling length, especially as the pitch slowed down. While pointing out positives, Rashid praised Gulbadin Naib’s intent with the bat, urging improvements in the opening overs and powerplay for future matches.
