The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) took action by sealing a spice manufacturing unit and halting the sale of approximately 2,000 kilograms of spices valued at around Rs 12.5 lakh. This decision followed an investigation triggered by an unsafe food sample linked to the facility. The Public Health Laboratory’s identification of the unsafe gravy sample from Jai Ambe Bhojanalay prompted the AMC’s Health Department to probe the spice source.
Officials discovered that the spices in the unsafe gravy were from the “Kesarinandan Spices” brand, produced by Jai Mataji Traders, owned by Vikram Thawani in Ahmedabad’s Old Madhupura Dhala area. A detailed inspection at the manufacturing unit revealed packed chilli powder, turmeric powder, and coriander-cumin powder under the Kesarinandan Spices brand, alongside loose stocks of the same products. In the interest of public health, a stop-sale order was issued for the estimated 2,000 kilograms of spices pending the investigation.
The seized stock, comprising packaged and loose spices, with an approximate value of Rs 12.5 lakh, led to the sealing of the manufacturing unit. Additionally, officials collected samples of chilli powder, turmeric powder, and coriander-cumin powder from Jai Mataji Traders for analysis at the Public Health Laboratory. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation emphasized its commitment to public health, stating that strict actions will be taken against any activities jeopardizing food safety under relevant laws.
