Three police officers in Bharuch district were apprehended by the Anti-Corruption Bureau for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs one lakh to return a mobile phone seized in a prohibition case. The complainant, who had been detained under the Prohibition Act, was asked for Rs three lakh by Assistant Head Constables Aniruddh Dhadhal and Jaydeepsinh Parmar to retrieve his phone.
Due to the complainant’s inability to pay the full amount at once, Dhadhal agreed to accept the bribe in three installments of Rs one lakh each. The Anti-Corruption Bureau set up a trap at the “D” Staff chamber near Panoli police station where Police Constable Sagar Chavda was caught accepting the first installment of Rs one lakh.
The bureau accused all three officers of colluding to accept the bribe. Dhadhal resides in Ankleshwar City Police Line, originally from Rajkot district; Chavda is stationed at Panoli police station, originally from Bhavnagar district; and Parmar resides in Ankleshwar City Police Line, originally from Surendranagar district. This incident is part of a recent series of anti-corruption operations involving police in Gujarat.
In a separate case earlier this month, a constable in Mehsana district was arrested for accepting an Rs 80,000 bribe, and in June, a Police Sub-Inspector and a head constable in Ahmedabad were arrested for demanding and receiving a Rs five lakh bribe.
