The prime suspect in the rape and murder case of a 12-year-old girl in Baruipur, West Bengal, has been apprehended by the Special Investigation Team. Identified as Ananda Sarkar, he was arrested from Baruipur Bazar. Two other suspects, Pravas Mondal and Dibakar Sardar, were previously detained and all will face court proceedings soon.
Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has pledged severe action, including possible capital punishment for those involved in the crime. He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring justice for the victim’s family and swift conviction of the accused individuals.
In response to a violent mob lynching a person during protests related to the case, Chief Minister Adhikari hinted at a communal aspect behind the incident. He expressed concerns over the damage caused during the protests, drawing parallels to past events like the Citizenship Amendment Act protests in 2019.
The tragic incident unfolded with the discovery of the girl’s body in a pond, with her family alleging rape and murder. To prevent further unrest, prohibitory orders have been imposed in Baruipur under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
