Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma supported the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the Assembly, emphasizing its aim to protect and ensure justice for women from minority communities. Sarma stated that the UCC Bill was introduced by the BJP-led government to prioritize social justice and safeguard the rights of religious minority women. He highlighted that the legislation would offer significant protection to women in areas such as marriage, inheritance, and social security.
Sarma clarified that the UCC was designed to provide the highest level of protection to women from minority communities, dismissing claims by opposition parties that the Bill had ulterior motives. He emphasized that the UCC aimed to establish equal rights and legal safeguards for all citizens, particularly women vulnerable under personal laws. The Chief Minister reiterated that the UCC was not directed against any specific religion or community but focused on ensuring justice and equality for all.
Despite the government’s emphasis on gender justice and women’s empowerment, opposition parties raised concerns about the UCC’s potential infringement on religious freedom and cultural practices. The BJP government reiterated its commitment to gender justice, women’s empowerment, and the protection of constitutional rights through the proposed UCC in Assam, with a focus on safeguarding the interests of indigenous and tribal communities.
