Over 40% of Australians attribute the ongoing fuel crisis to the United States and Israel, as revealed by a recent Essential Report poll. The survey, conducted by Essential Research, highlighted that 42% of respondents held the US and Israel accountable for initiating strikes on Iran. In contrast, 32% blamed the Australian government for lack of foresight, while 17% pointed fingers at Iran for closing the Strait of Hormuz.
The surge in fuel prices in Australia, attributed to Middle East conflicts, led to a temporary reduction in fuel sales tax by federal and state governments. As Treasurer Jim Chalmers prepares to unveil the federal budget for 2026-27 in May, 68% of respondents in the Essential poll expressed support for extending the fuel tax cut.
Looking ahead, 55% of participants anticipate a worsening national economy in the next six months, with only 14% expecting an improvement. This sentiment marks a shift from the previous poll in August 2025, where 35% predicted a decline and 22% foresaw progress. Additionally, 54% of Australians now believe the country is moving in the wrong direction, compared to 30% who feel it is on the right path.
