Bharatiya Janata Party’s West Bengal state president and Rajya Sabha member, Samik Bhattacharya, criticized the former Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government for diminishing the sanctity of Durga Puja, referring to it as just a festival without the essence of piety. Bhattacharya emphasized the importance of maintaining the sanctity associated with Durga Puja during a Khuti-Pujo event in North Kolkata.
While not directly naming anyone, Bhattacharya hinted at Mamata Banerjee’s past remarks that focused on the festival aspect rather than the religious significance of Durga Puja. He stressed that the sanctity and holiness of the festival should be upheld, highlighting that the presence of the Durga idol is paramount for the event’s essence.
Addressing concerns about demographic changes near the Bangladesh border, Bhattacharya drew parallels between certain West Bengal districts and Bangladesh, expressing worries about restrictions on religious practices. He assured that Durga Puja would be observed peacefully in the state, adhering to all traditions and norms.
