In Bengaluru, a meeting held by the Joint Parliamentary Committee saw the BJP endorsing the ‘One Nation, One Election’ plan, while the Congress strongly opposed it. The discussion centered on a proposed constitutional amendment for simultaneous elections.
During the meeting at Taj West End hotel, the Karnataka BJP advocated for synchronized elections nationwide. State BJP leaders, including B. Y. Vijayendra, engaged in the talks.
Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar of the Congress criticized the ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative, calling it a move to centralize power and undermine federalism. He emphasized the threat it poses to democracy and rejected the proposal outright.
Shivakumar highlighted the challenges of implementing simultaneous elections, citing the differences in election schedules across states. He accused the proposal of silencing regional and Opposition voices, reaffirming the Karnataka government’s disagreement with it.
