Amid discontent within the BJP over denial of tickets to several sitting legislators before the Assam Assembly elections, veteran leader Bijoya Chakravarty emphasized the importance of the party’s unity over individual aspirations. Speaking at the inauguration of BJP candidate Diplu Ranjan Sharma’s election office in New Guwahati, Chakravarty, 86, stressed that party interests should prevail over personal ambitions. She highlighted that the BJP’s decisions on ticket distribution should be respected without internal opposition.
Chakravarty’s remarks come as the state unit faces growing unease due to the denial of tickets to 18 sitting MLAs, including ministers, as part of the party’s candidate reshuffle strategy. Despite public expressions of disappointment from some leaders, the BJP leadership defended its selections, citing considerations of winnability, performance, and long-term organizational interests.
Emphasizing discipline and unity, Chakravarty, a senior BJP leader, called for collective efforts to ensure victory in the upcoming polls. She underlined the party’s governance achievements in Assam, particularly in development and security, urging a campaign focus on these accomplishments. Chakravarty also expressed confidence in Diplu Ranjan Sharma’s candidacy, urging voters to support him.
As the BJP prepares for a crucial electoral battle in Assam, internal challenges persist over ticket distribution, despite the party’s reliance on its governance track record and organizational strength. Notably, many dissatisfied BJP leaders who intended to contest independently have withdrawn their nominations following interventions by senior party officials.
