Newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Harshad Parmar has been sworn in as a member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. Parmar won the recent by-election from the Umreth constituency in Anand district. The oath-taking ceremony was conducted by Speaker Shankar Chaudhary at the Assembly complex in Gandhinagar.
The swearing-in event was graced by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Assembly Chief Whip Balkrishna Shukla, Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rushikesh Patel, and other members of the state cabinet and legislators. Harshad Parmar, son of the late legislator, secured victory in his first major electoral contest after retaining the Umreth seat for the BJP in a bypoll necessitated by the death of sitting MLA Govind Parmar in March.
Parmar defeated Congress candidate Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan by over 30,000 votes, as per Election Commission data. With 85,500 votes to his credit, Parmar expressed his gratitude to the electorate for their overwhelming support despite the scorching summer conditions. He dedicated his win to his late father and attributed his success to the goodwill earned through his father’s past work in the constituency.
The by-election for the Umreth Assembly constituency took place on April 23, with the results announced on May 4. The BJP’s victory in Umreth was part of its success in four seats nationally during the seven Assembly by-elections held across five states. Party sources highlighted the BJP’s consistent lead in Umreth during the counting process, securing nearly 59% of the vote in the constituency.
Harshad Parmar, now the representative of the Anand district and Anand Lok Sabha constituency in the 182-member House, follows in his father’s footsteps.
