The Calcutta High Court has granted anticipatory bail to Bengali actor and BJP MLA Hiran Chatterjee in a bigamy case. Chatterjee’s first wife, Anindita Chatterjee, filed a case against him at Anandpur police station. Following this, the BJP MLA filed a plea for anticipatory bail at the Calcutta High Court.
Justice Jay Sengupta’s bench, after hearing the case, approved Chatterjee’s anticipatory bail with the condition that he must appear before the investigating officer every 15 days. The hearing date for his anticipatory bail case was initially set for February 4 but was postponed. Meanwhile, Chatterjee had begun campaigning for the BJP before the Assembly polls in West Bengal.
Recently, a picture from Chatterjee’s second wedding became public, leading his first wife to lodge a complaint against him at Anandpur police station. A case was registered based on this complaint. Chatterjee’s lawyer had requested an urgent hearing on January 28, citing his client’s status as an MLA. However, the request was denied.
Police sources revealed that Chatterjee faces charges under Section 494 and Section 85 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for bigamy and domestic violence. Neither Chatterjee nor his first wife, Anindita, have issued official statements on the matter. Hiran Chatterjee, a popular Bengali actor, had joined the BJP before the 2021 West Bengal Assembly polls and won from the Kharagpur Sadar Assembly constituency in West Midnapore district.
In January of this year, Chatterjee married model Ritika Giri in Varanasi. Photos from the ceremony, where the bride wore a red Banarasi saree and Chatterjee a yellow kurta, went viral on social media. Anindita Chatterjee publicly questioned the legality of the second marriage, claiming they are neither divorced nor legally separated, and expressed concerns about the impact on their family, especially their daughter, leading to her filing a case against him.
