The relationship between India and Canada has been strained over the Khalistan issue, especially during Justin Trudeau’s tenure as Canada’s Prime Minister. However, ties have improved since then, with recent talks between National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Canadian officials signaling a reset in relations. The focus of the discussions was on combating Khalistani elements that have long operated from Canada to launch attacks and threaten India.
During the meeting, real-time intelligence sharing was a key agenda, particularly concerning Khalistani activities, drug trafficking, cyber threats, and Sikh extremism. This cooperation is seen as a significant step in addressing the escalating Khalistan movement, especially as intelligence reports suggest a resurgence of the movement orchestrated by the ISI in Punjab. The meeting aimed to disrupt these plans and rebuild trust between the two nations.
NSA Doval highlighted the issue of Khalistani fundraising through charities and Gurdwaras in Canada, emphasizing the need to dismantle the narco cartels that fund the movement. By shifting the narrative from free speech to terrorism and organized crime, both countries have agreed to combat the Khalistan issue more effectively. This shift in perspective is expected to make it harder for Khalistani elements to operate and spread their agenda.
The Khalistani groups, sensing increased scrutiny and cooperation between India and Canada, are reportedly exploring new bases in countries like Italy and Germany. However, dismantling their established network in Canada poses a significant challenge for these elements. As Canada’s Prime Minister plans a visit to India to further strengthen bilateral ties, the focus remains on countering Khalistani activities and maintaining high alertness to prevent any misadventures in Punjab.
