The Centre has sanctioned Rs 2,432 crore to enhance rural digital infrastructure and expand broadband connectivity in Andhra Pradesh. This financial support is for the implementation of the Amended BharatNet Programme in the state. The agreement involves various entities including Digital Bharat Nidhi, the Department of Telecommunications, and Andhra Pradesh BharatNet Infrastructure Limited.
The Amended BharatNet Programme, approved by the Union Cabinet on August 4, 2023, aims to upgrade, consolidate, and expand the existing BharatNet network. It focuses on providing robust broadband connectivity to all Gram Panchayats and villages in Andhra Pradesh. The project will cover a total of 13,426 Gram Panchayats, including upgrading Phase-I Gram Panchayats and bringing newly created ones under the network.
In addition to upgrading existing infrastructure, the programme will extend connectivity to 3,942 villages based on demand. This initiative is expected to create over five lakh rural home fibre connections with government support. It will enhance access to digital services like e-governance, online education, telemedicine, and digital payments, benefiting citizens in rural and remote areas.
The agreement signed between the involved parties is seen as a significant step towards accelerating the implementation of the Amended BharatNet Programme in Andhra Pradesh. It aligns with the shared goal of building a digitally empowered society and advancing towards a knowledge economy.
