A team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal Police visited Abhishek Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress General Secretary and Lok Sabha member, at his residence on Kalighat Road in south Kolkata. Banerjee, who is also the nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was expected to be questioned regarding alleged signature mismatches of some Trinamool Congress legislators on a resolution.
Scheduled to appear at the CID headquarters at Bhabani Bhavan in south Kolkata by noon on Monday, Banerjee requested a 15-day extension via email due to injuries sustained in an alleged assault on May 30 in Sonarpur. The CID investigation was initiated after two Trinamool Congress legislators reported forged signatures on the resolution nominating key positions in the West Bengal Assembly.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari disclosed that the CID probe stemmed from complaints by legislators Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha about signature irregularities. As the CID team awaited entry at Banerjee’s residence, security personnel indicated that access would only be granted with Banerjee’s approval.
