In Darjeeling district, the office of the District Magistrate organized a special event called the “Voters’ Pledge” to motivate voters for the upcoming Assembly election. The event saw a diverse gathering of youth and senior citizens coming together at Chowrasta in Darjeeling to participate in the voter pledge and a walkathon. Mascots of popular cartoon characters like “Chota Bheem” and “Chutki” added a lively touch to the event, engaging with the attendees and raising awareness about voting.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) shared pictures of the event on social media with the caption “Darjeeling Wakes Up with a Democracy Call.” The event aimed to promote peaceful and festive elections in Darjeeling and emphasized the importance of voter participation. The ECI has been actively encouraging voter turnout and ensuring free, fair, and violence-free polls during the election process.
According to an insider from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, the Commission has been conducting various interactive programs to educate voters on the significance of their votes in a democracy. The Darjeeling event was part of this initiative to engage with common voters and spread awareness about voting rights. The Commission’s focus also includes ensuring an accurate voters’ list by conducting a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise to eliminate fake voters and retain genuine ones.
