A petition filed by Delhi Gymkhana Club member Vijay Khurana and the Club’s Staff Welfare Association is scheduled for a hearing on July 6 in the Delhi High Court. The Union government issued an eviction notice to the colonial-era club, citing the critical need for the premises in a sensitive and strategic area of Delhi for Defence infrastructure and public security purposes.
The notice, signed by Deputy Land and Development Officer Suchit Goyal, informed the Club management that the 27.3-acre premises located at 2, Safdarjung Road, near the Prime Minister’s Residence, will be taken over by the government. Despite the Club’s challenge against the eviction directive, the High Court declined interim relief, with the government assuring lawful possession only.
The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs stated that the Club land is essential for urgent institutional needs and public-interest projects. Referring to the lease deed, the notice emphasized the lessor’s authority to re-enter the premises for public purposes. Established in 1913, the Delhi Gymkhana Club is a renowned social institution with iconic Lutyens-designed buildings, frequented by top officials and dignitaries.
