The Delhi High Court is set to announce its decision on Friday regarding petitions filed by Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav and others challenging their convictions in multiple cheque bounce cases. The judgment will be delivered by Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma in response to petitions arising from proceedings under the Negotiable Instruments Act. Rajpal Yadav has been granted interim suspension of sentence by the court, which has been in effect throughout the legal process.
The petitions, filed against M/s Murli Projects Pvt. Ltd., contest the orders issued by the trial court in various cheque dishonour cases. The Delhi High Court had previously extended the interim suspension of sentence for Rajpal Yadav, noting that he had made significant payments to the complainant company. Counsel representing Yadav informed the court that he had paid around Rs 4.25 crore to M/s Murli Projects Pvt. Ltd., with a demand draft of Rs 25 lakh presented in court.
Despite a plea from the complainant to cancel the interim relief, the court declined to revoke the suspension of Yadav’s sentence. The court emphasized that Yadav must either fulfill the settlement or defend the case on its merits. In a previous ruling, the Delhi High Court had instructed Rajpal Yadav to surrender to the Jail Superintendent after failing to meet settlement commitments despite multiple opportunities.
Justice Sharma expressed disappointment at Yadav’s repeated failure to comply with court undertakings and payment deadlines, leading to his conviction and sentencing in multiple cheque dishonour cases under the Negotiable Instruments Act in 2024.
