Residents in Delhi were greeted with widespread rainfall on Monday morning, bringing relief from the recent hot weather. The showers came after a weekend of similar weather that helped lower temperatures below 40 degrees Celsius.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a mostly cloudy day in the capital with intermittent light rain, thunderstorms, and lightning. Gusty winds of 40–50 kmph, reaching up to 60 kmph at times, are expected, especially in the morning. Additional showers may occur later in the evening.
Daytime temperatures are predicted to be below normal, ranging from 32 to 34 degrees Celsius, while night temperatures will hover between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius. The IMD’s monthly outlook suggests above-average rainfall for India in May, with some regions experiencing higher daytime temperatures than usual.
The IMD warns of an increase in heatwave days in specific areas, including parts of the Himalayan foothills, the eastern coastline, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. Overall, May’s rainfall is projected to surpass 110% of the long-period average, with some regions in the east and northeast likely to receive less rain than usual.
Delhi’s air quality remains in the ‘moderate’ category, with Air Quality Index (AQI) readings ranging from 85 to 142 at various monitoring stations, including Ashok Vihar, Bawana, Burari Crossing, and others.
