The ruling Democratic Party leadership has urged former floor leader Rep. Kim Byung-kee to voluntarily leave the party amidst growing corruption suspicions. The party is scheduled to select a new floor leader later in the day. DP spokesperson Park Soo-hyeon emphasized the need for Kim to carefully consider the best course of action for the party.
Park mentioned that there were discussions within the party about the potential expulsion of Kim. This call for Kim’s departure follows his resignation as the DP’s floor leader last month amid escalating allegations, including accusations of receiving money from a former local council member in 2020.
Despite increasing pressure for him to step down, Kim has stated his intention to remain in the party even if faced with expulsion. The party spokesperson highlighted the concerns of DP Chair Jung Chung-rae, who is reportedly considering public and party sentiments as the primary considerations in this matter.
The message to Kim from the party indicates that all options are being considered, including the possibility of disciplinary measures. The public outcry was triggered by an audio recording released by a local media outlet, revealing a conversation between Kim and Rep. Kang Sun-woo regarding financial transactions related to a party nomination for the 2022 local elections.
Kang, following the scandal, chose to leave the party and operate as an independent entity.
