Deposed Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina hinted at a possible foreign hand in the downfall of her government in August 2024. She expressed concerns about mercenaries instigating violence during a student-led protest.
Sheikh Hasina mentioned the establishment of a Judicial Inquiry Committee in July 2024 to investigate the incidents. However, the interim government led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, who took power in Dhaka, halted the probe.
The former premier criticized the ban on her party, the Awami League, by the Yunus-led administration. She claimed that the ban was an attempt to prevent her party from returning to power through a fair election.
Sheikh Hasina raised alarm over the current law-and-order situation, accusing the government of arresting critics and suppressing freedom of expression. She highlighted the lack of democracy and the stifling of opposition voices under the current regime.
The ex-PM also criticized Yunus for his alleged persecution of minorities and his foreign policy decisions. She warned against the dangers of aligning with foreign interests that could undermine Bangladesh’s sovereignty and stability.
