The Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in 16 States and three Union Territories. This nationwide effort aims to enhance the accuracy and transparency of voter lists. The SIR’s Phase-III schedule has been set to ensure comprehensive coverage, excluding only Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh.
With the involvement of over 3.94 lakh Booth Level Officers (BLOs), door-to-door verification of around 36.73 crore electors will be conducted during the Enumeration Phase. The ECI emphasized the participative nature of the SIR, engaging electors, political parties, and election officials at various levels. The Commission urged political parties to appoint Booth Level Agents for each polling booth to guarantee transparency and efficiency during the revision process.
The SIR exercise, which has already covered 13 States and Union Territories, involved nearly 59 crore electors during the initial phases. More than 6.3 lakh BLOs and 9.2 lakh BLAs were actively involved in these stages. The primary objective of this intensive revision initiative is to ensure error-free electoral rolls by eliminating duplicate, shifted, deceased, or ineligible entries while facilitating the inclusion of all eligible voters.
