Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel shared insights on Assam’s political landscape and campaign strategies before the upcoming Assembly elections. Baghel highlighted the Congress’ approach, interactions with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and the prevailing voter sentiment. The Assam Assembly polls, comprising 126 seats, are set for April 9, with vote counting on May 4, as per the Election Commission of India.

Baghel criticized the alleged corruption and arrogance under CM Sarma’s leadership in Assam. He predicted a public backlash against Sarma’s arrogance during the polls, emphasizing internal discord within the BJP. Baghel, also serving as Congress’ election observer for Assam, reiterated his stance on the leadership divide within the Congress in Assam, distinguishing between the “real Congress” led by Gaurav Gogoi and the “fake Congress” under CM Sarma.

Stressing the political showdown in Assam, Baghel emphasized the battle between the “real Congress” and the “fake Congress,” with Gaurav Gogoi representing the former and Himanta Biswa Sarma the latter. He noted a growing pro-Congress sentiment in Assam. Baghel expressed disappointment over CM Sarma’s recent remarks about the Congress, hinting at a forthcoming press conference in Assam to address the issue.

CM Sarma’s comments in Nagaon, where he dismissed the Congress’ electoral prospects in Assam, drew criticism from Baghel, who accused Sarma of losing perspective. Sarma’s assertion that the Congress lacks a political future in India was met with skepticism. The Assam Chief Minister’s accusations of irresponsible politics by Congress leaders were also challenged.

Chief Minister Sarma, a former prominent Congress figure in Assam, shifted to the BJP in 2015 and subsequently ascended to the role of Assam’s Chief Minister.
