As tensions rise in West Asia, the government has announced that it will track every Indian seafarer in the affected Gulf region, regardless of the vessel’s registration. A ‘Seafarer-First’ initiative has been launched to protect Indian seafarers in conflict zones with a coordinated government response.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has instructed the Director General of Shipping (DGS) to create a detailed operational dashboard for each vessel, monitoring all Indian crew members in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, and Gulf of Oman. This dashboard will offer real-time data on vessel status, crew details, threat assessments, and voyage plans.

Expressing concern over recent attacks on civilian merchant ships, Minister Sonowal emphasized India’s strong objection to such incidents. He highlighted the unfortunate loss and injuries suffered by Indian seafarers due to these attacks, stressing the need for enhanced safety measures and support for seafarers.

The government is actively collaborating with Indian Missions in Iran, Oman, and the UAE, as well as the Ministry of External Affairs, to gather timely and verified information on safety advisories, medical assistance, repatriation procedures, and ongoing investigations. Additionally, shipowners and agencies employing Indian seafarers in the region have been urged to ensure compliance and provide necessary support to all crew members.
