Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis revealed in the Legislative Assembly that a thorough investigation will be conducted into suspected malpractices, tax evasion, and irregularities within the state’s Regional Transport Office (RTO). This decision comes after discussions with the Transport Minister and a serious consideration of concerns raised by house members. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik highlighted instances of tax evasion related to the registration of high-end luxury vehicles, emphasizing the need for stricter verification processes.
A significant issue identified was the registration of vehicles by Maharashtra residents in areas like Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, and Puducherry, despite availing loans from state-based banks. The RTO has already taken action against such practices and plans to implement a stringent verification system involving GST checks, bank loan records, and residential proofs. To ensure an impartial investigation, a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by senior IPS officer Priyanka Naranaware has been established to look into the complaints and allegations against the RTO department.
Meanwhile, Tribal Development Minister Ashok Uike informed the Assembly about the suspension of a Class-1 Deputy Director (Research) in the Tribal Development Department following a bribery case. The official was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 2,500,000 during a trap set by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). The process of filing a chargesheet for a departmental inquiry is underway, with final actions pending the court’s decision. An investigation into all caste verification and validity certificates issued by the accused officer will also be conducted to address any potential irregularities.
