Hundreds of fishermen from Tamil Nadu, mainly in Iran, are stranded due to the conflict in West Asia, disrupting their work abroad. Families in coastal districts like Kanniyakumari and Thoothukudi are worried about the safety of their relatives engaged in maritime jobs. Around 593 fishermen from Tamil Nadu are currently working in Iran and neighboring countries, with concerns rising as tensions escalate in the region.

The Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department officials stated that despite no direct distress calls from the fishermen, families are anxious for updates amidst the conflict. The state government is actively monitoring the situation and providing support within its capabilities. The closure of Iranian ports and airports has complicated matters, hindering evacuation efforts for those stranded.

The Indian Embassy in Iran is offering assistance to Indian citizens stuck in the region, with helpline numbers and contact details shared for communication. The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court addressed the issue through petitions concerning fishermen stranded in Iran. The Union government informed the court about the challenges in evacuation due to closed routes but assured assistance through the Indian Embassy.

MP C. Robert Bruce met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to seek help for 43 fishermen from Idinthakarai village reportedly stranded in Iran. The court advised petitioners to provide full details of the fishermen to the embassy for necessary action. The situation remains critical for the fishermen awaiting rescue in the conflict-affected region.
