The ICAR–Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR–CMFRI) recently organized a “Swachhta Pakhwada” from December 16 to 31. This initiative involved cleanliness drives, awareness programs, and community engagement activities to emphasize the importance of shared social responsibility for cleanliness. CMFRI staff actively participated in organized cleanliness drives and awareness sessions focusing on plastic pollution and waste management practices.

The campaign aimed to combine behavioral change with practical actions in alignment with the Swachh Bharat Mission’s goals. A significant aspect of the program was a training session for farmers on innovative food waste recycling technology using black soldier fly larvae. This training showcased sustainable methods for converting organic waste into valuable resources, addressing waste disposal and environmental conservation issues.

Stakeholders from fisheries and allied sectors participated in the program, which included special awareness sessions for fishers on hygiene, clean surroundings, and responsible marine resource utilization. CMFRI scientists highlighted the connection between cleanliness, public health, and sustainable fisheries during these interactions.

The campaign also featured street plays to raise awareness among local communities on cleanliness, waste segregation, and environmental stewardship. School children actively engaged in interactive sessions to instill environmentally responsible habits from a young age. These efforts aimed to create lasting awareness by encouraging students to promote cleanliness within their families and communities.

In addition to outreach activities, the campaign focused on digitalization and administrative efficiency through the implementation of an e-office system and improved organization of office records. Practical measures like waste segregation and workplace hygiene improvements were undertaken to enhance workplace cleanliness and space utilization. Similar activities were conducted at CMFRI’s regional centers across the country, contributing to improved workplace hygiene and enhanced awareness of cleanliness and environmental responsibility.
