India has transformed into a global digital force within the past 12 years, driven by advancements in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum technologies, data centers, and digital public infrastructure. The country has shifted from being a mere consumer to a creator of technology solutions on a global scale, supported by robust policy backing, expanding digital infrastructure, and a thriving innovation environment.
The Digital India initiative has played a pivotal role in this evolution. Internet connections in India have surged from 25.15 crore in 2014 to over 102 crore in 2026, while broadband connections have risen from 6.1 crore to nearly 100 crore during this period. Optical fiber coverage has more than doubled to exceed 42 lakh route kilometers, and 5G services now encompass nearly all districts nationwide.
India’s prowess in advanced technologies has been emphasized by the government. Through initiatives like the National Supercomputing Mission, the country has deployed 38 supercomputers with a combined computing capacity of 47 petaflops across leading institutions, including indigenous PARAM Rudra systems.
In the semiconductor sector, the Semicon India Programme, with an investment of Rs 76,000 crore, has sanctioned 12 projects worth approximately Rs 1.64 lakh crore, encompassing semiconductor fabrication facilities, compound semiconductor units, and chip packaging plants. Moreover, the IndiaAI Mission, with a budget exceeding Rs 10,300 crore, is establishing a common computing facility equipped with over 38,000 GPUs.
