India head coach Gautam Gambhir expressed his support for the ICC’s decision to trial switching from a red ball to a pink ball in Test matches affected by bad light. The ICC approved this trial during a recent board meeting, allowing teams to switch balls before a match starts if bad light is expected. This move aims to maximize playtime in such conditions.
Gambhir emphasized the importance of having the opportunity to achieve results in Test matches, especially crucial ones like the World Test Championship final qualifiers. He highlighted the potential unfairness of losing playtime due to bad light, supporting the proactive approach of using pink balls to continue play under stadium lights.
Previously, pink balls were exclusive to day-night Test matches, primarily held in Australia. However, the new trial permits teams to switch to pink balls during standard day Tests to combat bad light interruptions. This change intends to reduce delays caused by darkness and ensure a fair chance for teams to complete matches successfully.
Gambhir acknowledged the challenges and potential difficulties for players in adapting to this change but stressed the positive impact it could have on ensuring fair outcomes in critical Test matches. He encouraged teams to embrace this proactive initiative for the betterment of Test cricket.
