The Indian Army has taken a significant step in breaking free from the colonial past by renaming 246 roads and buildings that previously bore British-era names. This move is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to eliminate symbols of colonial rule and reaffirm India’s historical and cultural identity.

The renaming initiative extends across various locations in cantonments and military establishments nationwide. Among the 246 renamed sites are 124 roads, 77 residential colonies, 27 buildings and military facilities, and 18 other structures like parks, training areas, and gates. Noteworthy is that all new names pay tribute to gallantry award winners, war heroes, freedom fighters, and eminent military leaders pivotal in India’s history.

In Delhi Cantonment, Kirby Place is now Kenuguruse Vihar, and the renowned Mall Road has been renamed Arun Khetarpal Marg after the Param Vir Chakra awardee. Similarly, in Ambala Cantonment, Patterson Road Quarters is now Dhan Singh Thapa Enclave, honoring another decorated war hero.

The renaming effort also encompasses prestigious military institutions. For instance, at the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, Collins Block has been renamed Nubra Block, and Kingsway Block is now Kargil Block, commemorating India’s valor in high-altitude warfare. These changes reflect a broader initiative to honor India’s heroes and nation-builders while preserving historical sensitivity.

The proposal to rename colonial-era structures was initially presented by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in 2021 during the 96th Foundation Day celebrations of the Defence Estates Directorate General (DGDE). He emphasized the importance of promptly renaming roads and buildings in cantonments to honor India’s brave soldiers and leaders, while also acknowledging the historical contributions of British officers with due respect.

In a symbolic move, Kolkata’s Fort William, the Army’s Eastern Command headquarters, has been renamed Vijay Durg in tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Other notable renamings include George Gate to Shivaji Dwar, Kitchener House to Field Marshal Manekshaw Bhavan, Dalhousie Barracks to Netaji Barracks, and Russell Block to honor freedom fighter Bagha Jatin.
