India has made significant strides in expanding its digital infrastructure, with over 2.15 lakh Gram Panchayats now connected through BharatNet. The deployment of optical fiber has more than doubled from 2019 to 2025, covering 42.36 lakh route kilometers. Additionally, 5G connectivity now extends to 99.9% of districts, supported by over 5.18 lakh base transceiver stations.
Prime Minister Wi-Fi Access Network Interface (PM‑WANI) has facilitated the deployment of 4,09,111 Wi‑Fi hotspots, along with the support of 207 PDO Aggregators and 113 App Providers as of February 2026. This initiative aims to provide affordable and high-speed public internet access, especially in rural and remote areas. Integrating last-mile access, literacy programs, and affordable internet services is crucial for strengthening rural livelihoods and promoting inclusive participation in India’s digital economy.
The expansion of cloud and data center capacity is rapidly progressing to support digital governance and AI-ready infrastructure. Currently at about 1,280 megawatts, the total data center capacity is projected to grow four to five times by 2030. Through MeghRaj (GI Cloud), more than 2,170 ministries and departments are hosting applications on secure and scalable government cloud platforms.
India has witnessed a significant drop in data costs, from Rs 269 per GB in 2014 to approximately Rs 8–10 per GB in 2025–2026, positioning it as one of the world’s most affordable data markets. The country has surpassed 100 crore broadband subscriptions as of November 2025, marking a substantial increase from 13.15 crore a decade earlier.
The National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) has deployed 38 supercomputers with a combined capacity of 44 Petaflops across various institutions nationwide. This initiative aims to provide equitable access to advanced computing resources beyond metropolitan areas, supporting sectors such as AI, climate modeling, biotechnology, and advanced manufacturing.
Key digital public infrastructure pillars like Aadhaar, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and DigiLocker are transforming internet access into tangible social and economic outcomes. These initiatives ensure seamless service delivery, enhance financial inclusion, and promote trusted digital interactions, thereby integrating every Indian into the digital economy.
