The Jal Shakti Ministry achieved significant milestones in 2025 through the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) Phase II. Over 83% of villages were designated as ODF Plus (Model), with more than 5.27 lakh villages having solid waste management arrangements and 5.41 lakh villages having liquid waste management setups. The Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2025 campaign, held in September and October, saw participation from over 18 crore people, including 13 crore individuals from rural India.
Union Minister for Jal Shakti, C.R. Patil, spearheaded a Shramdaan program at Kalindi Kunj as part of the ‘Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath’ initiative inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call. Additionally, the Minister of State for Jal Shakti engaged with more than 150 sarpanches before the 79th Independence Day celebrations in 2025. The ‘Hamara Shauchalay, Hamara Bhavishya’ campaign by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation led to the repair and enhancement of over one lakh Individual Household Latrines (IHHLs) and 550 Community Sanitary Complexes (CSCs).
The Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) is a centrally sponsored scheme initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 2, 2014, with the goal of achieving Open Defecation Free (ODF) status by October 2, 2019. By October 2019, all villages in India had declared themselves ODF, marking a rise in rural sanitation coverage from 39% in 2014 to 100% in 2019.
