Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has announced the allocation of Rs 1 crore to each rural Assembly constituency to ensure a continuous supply of drinking water due to the ongoing rainfall deficit. The decision was made during a meeting in Belagavi to address the emerging drought-like conditions without waiting for central government assistance.
Shivakumar emphasized the importance of preventing water scarcity by empowering local legislators to utilize the allocated funds effectively. He highlighted the participation of MLAs and MPs from the region in discussions regarding various issues affecting north Karnataka.
The Chief Minister revealed that review meetings have been conducted to assess the drought situation in Kalaburagi and Belagavi, with input from over 50 legislators and Members of Parliament. Plans are in place to provide necessary support to farmers by ensuring the availability of seeds and fertilizers.
Shivakumar directed officials to focus on water conservation efforts to meet both drinking water and irrigation needs, especially considering the uncertain water availability in the upcoming months. Additionally, he mentioned plans for a separate meeting in Bengaluru to address the fertiliser supply situation.
