Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan refuted claims by the Opposition that Kerala’s public healthcare system was deteriorating. Speaking in the Assembly, he emphasized that Kerala continues to set a national benchmark in healthcare. Vijayan responded to the Congress-led UDF’s motion for discussion on the alleged health crisis, highlighting the government’s structural enhancements and investments in the sector.
Vijayan praised Kerala’s extensive healthcare infrastructure development during the Covid-19 pandemic, showcasing the State’s effective management of the health emergency. He pointed out significant reforms undertaken by the government since the LDF assumed power, including initiatives like the Aardram Mission aimed at enhancing government hospitals, patient care, and primary health services.
The Chief Minister cautioned against misrepresenting isolated incidents as systemic failures and defended the global reputation earned by Kerala’s public health system. He assured that the government takes prompt action upon identifying shortcomings and continually works on improving the system.
Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan criticized the government for alleged healthcare delivery breakdown characterized by negligence, staff shortages, and inadequate emergency facilities. Satheesan cited instances of medical errors, delayed treatments, and insufficient infrastructure in medical colleges and district hospitals to support his claim that the system is in critical condition.
Satheesan also raised concerns about the lack of accountability following Health Department inquiries and highlighted the alleged neglect of certain medical colleges, particularly those established during the UDF’s tenure. He pointed out the escalating out-of-pocket medical expenses, asserting that common people are being pushed towards unaffordable private healthcare.
The debate on the adjournment motion exposed the deep political divide regarding Kerala’s healthcare situation, with the Opposition painting a grim picture while the government defended its reform efforts and crisis management record. The clash over healthcare, a pivotal issue in the State, indicates a growing contention over governance and responsibility as the assembly elections draw near.
