Kerala is grappling with a dual health crisis as it deals with a fresh Nipah virus scare and an ongoing Shigella outbreak in Wayanad, with new cases surfacing in various districts. State Health Minister K. Muraleedharan reassured the public that the situation is under control, emphasizing that there is no need for alarm as authorities are closely monitoring the developments. The Centre has heightened its vigilance on the Nipah situation in Kerala following a suspected new case.
The Union Health Ministry has been closely monitoring the situation in Kerala and has provided necessary support to contain any potential spread of the Nipah virus. Samples from suspected patients and contacts have been expedited to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, for detailed testing to ascertain the severity of the infection and the virus source. Efforts are underway to accelerate the testing process to obtain conclusive results.
Authorities have instructed the state to adhere strictly to established Nipah prevention protocols and standard operating procedures. The Union Health Ministry is collaborating closely with the Kerala Health Department to evaluate containment measures and has pledged technical assistance and expert support if needed. The public has been advised to stay calm and adhere to the health department’s guidelines to prevent unnecessary panic.
Meanwhile, Wayanad remains on high alert due to the Shigella outbreak affecting children, with the number of confirmed cases reaching nine and more test results awaited. Health officials reported that 502 children from Koliyadi school sought treatment for symptoms linked to the infection, with 47 individuals currently receiving medical care in hospitals. To curb further transmission, schools in three panchayats and the Sulthan Bathery municipality area have been closed, and parents are advised to avoid crowded places and public events until the situation improves.
Health authorities are conducting field-level inspections, surveillance, and awareness campaigns in affected areas to contain the spread of both infectious diseases. With the emergence of these two health concerns, officials are emphasizing the importance of vigilance and caution among the public to mitigate risks and dispel unnecessary fears.
