Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) authorities, under the leadership of Mayor Firhad Hakim, have initiated an investigation into several properties reportedly belonging to Abhishek Banerjee, the General Secretary of Trinamool Congress. Notices have been issued to 17 properties owned or co-owned by Abhishek Banerjee within the KMC’s jurisdiction, giving them a chance to present their case under Section 400(1) of the KMC Act 1980.
Among the properties under scrutiny are two residences of Abhishek Banerjee in Kolkata, located at 188A Harish Mukherjee Road and 121 Kalighat Road. The KMC has posted copies of the notices on the walls of these properties, including one served to a corporate entity, Leaps & Bounds Private Limited, reportedly linked to the Banerjee family.
These properties are situated in close proximity to the residence of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kalighat. Despite these developments, there has been no official response from the Trinamool Congress regarding the notices served by the KMC. Opposition parties have previously raised concerns about properties registered under various members of the Banerjee family during the Trinamool Congress regime.
The KMC’s actions follow remarks made by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who hinted at inquiries into properties associated with a corporate entity allegedly connected to Abhishek Banerjee. Adhikari, without directly naming Banerjee, referred to him as “Mr Nephew” during a recent public address. The Chief Minister emphasized the new government’s commitment to pursuing legal action against individuals involved in corruption during the previous Trinamool Congress administration.
