As the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal’s term nears its end in April, Odisha’s Revenue and Disaster Management Minister criticized the previous state government for not adequately protecting Odisha’s interests during the tribunal proceedings. The tribunal was established in 2018 under the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act due to disagreements between Odisha and Chhattisgarh over water sharing.
During a recent media address, Minister Suresh Pujari highlighted the lack of effort by the previous government in advocating for Odisha’s interests before the tribunal. He expressed concern that only one witness was examined by Odisha over several years, with insufficient written statements or arguments presented.
Pujari also mentioned that statements made by the former Water Resources Minister were used by Chhattisgarh as evidence to support their stance on the construction of barrages. He emphasized that more than 500 structures were built in Chhattisgarh without strong objections from Odisha between 2014 and 2024.
With the tribunal’s tenure ending soon, Pujari urged for an extension to ensure a fair resolution for Odisha. He reassured the state government’s dedication to defending Odisha’s water rights and interests, emphasizing the need for a proactive approach in the Mahanadi water issue.
