Major General (Retd.) Arvind Bhatia highlighted the significance of the Great Nicobar Project, stating that it will enhance India’s maritime capabilities and reduce reliance on foreign ports. The development plan in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands aims to strengthen surveillance over crucial global shipping routes. Bhatia stressed the project’s geopolitical relevance, especially its proximity to the busy Strait of Malacca.
The Major General pointed out that India’s positioning near the Strait of Malacca, a vital maritime chokepoint, will enable better monitoring of international trade and strategic movements, particularly those involving China. He emphasized that being closer to this route will enhance the effectiveness of India’s naval forces, Coast Guard, and surveillance systems. Bhatia noted that the project includes the development of various infrastructure, such as an international transshipment container terminal and a greenfield airport.
Bhatia highlighted the economic aspect of the project, mentioning that the transshipment terminal is expected to handle a significant volume of container traffic, reducing India’s dependence on foreign ports. He also underlined the strategic importance of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which gained renewed focus after comprehensive mapping and surveys directed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018. The project aims to enhance India’s rapid response capabilities in the region through the deployment of fighter aircraft.
The Major General drew parallels with global chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing the critical role of maritime routes in global trade and security. He urged political consensus on national security initiatives, emphasizing the need for bipartisan support on strategic assets development. Bhatia highlighted that the project aims to balance development needs with environmental considerations while advancing national security goals.
The Great Nicobar Project is viewed as a transformative initiative that combines economic growth, infrastructure development, and strategic military preparedness. It positions India as a key player in the Indo-Pacific region, aiming to boost domestic capacity and enhance maritime domain awareness.
