Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the dispatch of a fifth ship carrying humanitarian aid to Cuba to address the increasing shortages faced by its people. Sheinbaum, in a press conference, reiterated Mexico’s opposition to the long-standing economic blockade imposed by the US on Cuba since 1962. She emphasized Mexico’s commitment to solidarity with all nations, particularly Cuba, by providing essential aid.
Mexico’s humanitarian assistance to Cuba excludes oil, as Russia has been fulfilling Cuba’s oil needs. The focus remains on delivering crucial supplies to alleviate the scarcity of basic goods. Meanwhile, the US has recently escalated sanctions on Cuba through executive orders, hindering access to necessary resources like fuel and penalizing Cuban entities. Cuba refuted claims by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding a supposed $100 million humanitarian aid offer from the US, stating it as fabricated to justify US actions.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez dismissed Rubio’s assertions, highlighting the severe economic impact of US sanctions on Cuba. Rodriguez emphasized the significant financial losses and humanitarian consequences resulting from the US economic warfare against Cuba. The ongoing restrictions on revenue, technology, food, fuel, and medicine have severely affected the Cuban population, as per Rodriguez’s statement.
