Polling has started in 29 municipal corporations, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Originally planned for 2,869 seats, including 227 in the BMC, the elections will now be held for 2,801 seats due to 68 candidates being elected unopposed.
A total of 3.48 crore voters will determine the fate of 15,931 candidates, with 1,729 candidates vying for positions in Mumbai. The counting of votes is scheduled for January 16. The State Election Commission has set up 39,147 polling stations with 43,958 Control Units and 87,916 Ballot Units.
The battlegrounds include various cities like Navi Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, and Thane. Elections for the 29 municipal corporations are taking place after a gap of over six years, with nine in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), known as India’s most urbanized belt.
