The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has significantly broadened its political influence over the years, expanding both geographically and in representation. Currently, the NDA governs states that encompass more than three-fourths of India’s population, showcasing a wide social and regional presence. This growth marks a substantial evolution from its early coalition days to a comprehensive national alliance.
A recent resolution passed at an NDA meeting in New Delhi commemorating 12 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership emphasized the alliance’s extensive and impactful growth trajectory. Notably, the NDA has established a strong foothold in socially diverse regions, holding power in seven of the top 10 states with the highest Scheduled Caste (SC) population and eight of the top 10 states with the highest Scheduled Tribe (ST) population.
The resolution highlighted the NDA’s expansion since 2014, both politically and geographically, with successful government formations in states like Haryana, Tripura, Assam, and West Bengal for the first time. Through strategic coalition partnerships, the NDA has secured significant electoral victories in states such as Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, and Maharashtra, solidifying its position as a multi-party alliance rather than a single-party entity.
In addition, the NDA’s consistent governance presence in various regions, including the Northeast with its diverse tribal and Christian populations, underscores its transformation into a pan-India political coalition deeply rooted in regional contexts. The alliance attributes its sustained success to a shift from traditional anti-incumbency politics to a phase of “pro-incumbency,” where governance performance and electoral trust have led to repeated mandates.
The NDA’s expansion, culminating in a historic third consecutive term at the national level in 2024, is viewed as a significant milestone in Indian political history. By adhering to the “India First” principle and balancing regional aspirations with national priorities, the alliance has fostered a platform that integrates local leadership with a broader national development agenda. Analysts note that the NDA’s reach extends beyond electoral numbers to encompass a substantial governance presence across vast swathes of the country, solidifying its status as a pan-India political force.
