The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) issued a public apology for a section on the judiciary in its Class 8 Social Science textbook, ‘Exploring Society: India and Beyond’. The entire book, including the controversial chapter titled ‘The Role of Judiciary in Our Society’, has been withdrawn by the council.
NCERT had previously published the textbook for Grade 8 (Part II) and faced criticism over the chapter discussing alleged “judicial corruption”. Following concerns raised, NCERT instructed the return of all copies of the banned textbook and removal of any related content from digital platforms.
The Supreme Court had imposed a ban on further distribution of the NCERT Class 8 book due to its references to corruption in the judiciary. The court expressed deep concern over the content, stating that the institution was suffering as a result of the controversial chapter.
