The ChipIN Centre, supported by MeitY, has been launched at Sona College of Technology in Tamil Nadu. This center focuses on semiconductor design education and VLSI research to bolster India’s semiconductor industry and aid the ‘Make in India’ chip initiative. Equipped with advanced EDA tools worth Rs 100 million, the center will facilitate semiconductor design work and industry-oriented projects for students and researchers.
The Sona ChipIN Centre, part of the Chips to Startup (C2S) program, is housed within the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE). Dr. V Veerappan and Shekar Viswanathan inaugurated the facility, emphasizing the importance of developing a ‘Made in India’ chip in the next 24-36 months. This initiative aligns with the India Semiconductor Mission to enhance the country’s semiconductor ecosystem.
Sona Institutions Chairman C Valliappa stressed the significance of the center amid India’s expanding semiconductor landscape and its foray into advanced 3nm chip development. The center aims not only for indigenous chip production but also to cultivate industry-ready semiconductor engineers. The ECE Department will utilize the facility to train students in various programs related to chip design and technology, supported by leading global technology platforms.
The C2S Programme, initiated by MeitY in 2022 with a budget of Rs 250 crore over five years, seeks to strengthen India’s semiconductor and chip design ecosystem in academic institutions. The program’s objective is to prepare 85,000 professionals proficient in chip design and VLSI fields at different educational levels, as per government plans.
