Batting all-rounder Glenn Phillips highlighted the importance of building a partnership with Daryl Mitchell to stabilize New Zealand’s innings in the series decider against India. Despite a shaky start at 58/3, Mitchell’s 137 and Phillips’ 106 propelled New Zealand to a competitive 337/8 at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.
Phillips emphasized the strategy of forming a partnership on the two-paced pitch, stating, “It’s a small ground, the pitch was a little bit more two-paced than we thought. The plan was to put on a partnership and give ourselves a chance.” He acknowledged a slow start, taking 37 balls for his first boundary, before eventually reaching his second ODI century.
Acknowledging Mitchell’s role in maintaining the scoring rate, Phillips mentioned, “There was a certain stage around the 30th over where I was a bit edgy, but playing with Mitchell gives you a lot of confidence.” He expressed confidence in the team’s total and hoped that the New Zealand spinners would capitalize on the pitch’s turn during the defense.
